The LongJump architecture emphasizes network protocols and tools that are based on well accepted, open standards. Open standards that are widely used are supported by multiple vendors, and have predictable properties that are thoroughly understood. This drives down costs due to increased competition amongst suppliers, and also by allowing more accurate forecasting of system requirements.
On the client side, it is especially important to avoid proprietary extensions to cross-platform tools. With a good design, such extensions are rarely necessary. Not being tied to a single platform is highly beneficial, because it allows the maximum flexibility in following the changing needs of users.
